38. MESSENGER

FINDING BALANCE IS AN UNENDING QUEST and dance unto itself. Nina knows this. She also knows the days pass too quickly. Gone before you even realize. It’s the reason she’s already made plans for tomorrow. She’ll conduct another sharing circle at the shelter. Each woman who takes part can talk about whatever is on her mind. Nina knows her discussion will be about the Medicine Wheel.

She knows that so many young Aboriginal people have never heard about the teachings of mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical enlightenment. She will share her thoughts on walking the earth in a good and peaceful way, and why it is important to connect with spirit. And she has some tools.

Nina has beaded on a large piece of soft, white leather an image of the Medicine Wheel. The four colours are divided into four equal parts. Red, black, yellow, and white—representating each colour of the human race. She packs the leather reminder in a bag along with a list of books and places it all beside her purse on the kitchen table. This way when she leaves in the morning there is no way to forget. That happens sometimes. Leaving the house without essential items. Not sure if the forgetfulness comes with age or just being so busy.

Nina decides that she’ll talk about the Medicine Wheel and why it’s important to have this knowledge before she begins to teach the women at the shelter how to make an outfit for those who wish to do so. She wants them to dance too. Maybe follow their own path of enlightenment. Thoughts about the next day bring a feeling of accomplishment and Nina smiles at herself in the mirror in the bathroom before removing her dentures and combing her long grey hair. She’ll braid it again in the morning.

It’s been a good day. What she’s done means women will drum. What she plans to do means women will dance. She says a silent prayer before moving back the handmade star blanket on her bed , another gift, this one from her students at the university. It is time for some rest. She closes her eyes and sleep takes her immediately.

He comes during the night on hind legs as strong and sturdy as an oak tree. Nina is standing in a clearing in the bush. She hears him before she sees him. But there is no fear.

Tanisi i-isithihkasoyin? The creature asks for her name. She tells him.

Kaskiti Maskwas Iskwiw, her spirit name: Black Bear Woman.

The wind in the forest stops. The moon illuminates the spot on which she is standing as brightly as a headlamp.

The creature seems as tall as the trees. He dons the antlers of an elk but his face is human. It is a kind face. The creature snorts and paws at the ground, sending up swirls of dust. He’s come to give Kaskiti Maskwas Iskwiw a warning.

Ravens are old and cunning and wise,

stealing when the sun is high.

They do not fly at night.

If you see this turn back.
